we were watching the Britcom "Waiting for God" on PBS, and there was a bit where someone asked everyone else if they were going to church, since it was Sunday. the group replied that they were going tomorrow, for a funeral, and "we wouldn't want God to get sick of us."

my mother thought this was a good opportunity to inform my sister and i that we WERE going to church with the family tomorrow. i bristled at this, and mentioned that, at 21 years old, i ought to be old enough to decide on my own if i want to go to church or not. to this my mother responded, "fine, rot in hell." o_O

I think it's more worrying that you were all watching "Waiting For God" and that you class it as a comedy :)

well, none of us particularly like it, but it's the first show in the Saturday evening Britcom block on the local PBS station. the good shows come on later, or in the Sunday evening block.

Ooh - what other shows do they show in this block?

Given that it's PBS (aside from PBS pledge drive stories from RD... my knowledge of PBS is formed by Simpsons & South Park, so it's not perfect) it'll be interesting to see what you get :)

Re:

Saturday night, beginning at 8pm:
Waiting For God
Last of the Summer Wine
Keeping Up Appearances
Are You Being Served (old, i know; but every time they ax it they get tons of letters asking for it back)
People Like Us
Chef
Coupling
Red Dwarf
Black Adder (same as Are You Being Served)
Fawlty Towers
Brittas Empire

Sunday night, beginning at 10pm:
As Time Goes By
Keeping Up Appearances (a different episode than the pervious evening)
My Hero
Are You Being Served (same as Keeping Up Appearances)
Open All Hours
'Allo 'Allo
Only Fools and Horses
Father Ted

of course, this is based on the listings at the station's website, and the schedule does change a bit every so often based on which shows receive the most support during pledge drives. strictly from looking at copyright dates, the station tries to keep a decent mix of old and new shows...of course it's always interesting to see what people in the UK think of what passes for a sampling of British TV over here ^_~

I think it's fairly representative, but it doesn't include (at a glance) any ITV (Channel 3) shows - mainly BBC productions and a couple of Channel 4 efforts.

It is a mix of a lot of old and 'sterotypical' shows (Waiting..., Last Of..., Keeping Up..., Are You..) with some old, yet still gaining good ratings, niche shows (Black Adder, RD, Fawlty Towers, Only Fools etc) which mixes with some 'newer' shows like My Hero (last couple of years), Father Ted (last 5), Coupling (last couple).

It's not bad considering it's PBS that it's on...

Church is not so bad ...

... and on Sunday morning my mother was preaching, and she got me to read (Luke and Romans), and after the service we drove two-hundred-plus miles to go to church again ...
It's fun. Really it is.
