non solum memento mori, memento vivere sed etiam
i feel like making a nice long political rant, but i hate politics, and talking about politics just gets me in a bad mood. most of you live in a country where socialism is the norm, and probably don't understand most of my objections to it, or to liberalism in general. suffice it to say that coddling people and always giving them more chances isn't the way to get them to stop doing bad things. honestly, would you Brits really be any happier about Blair if he was bowing to France and Germany? i suspect not.

but that's not what's got me in such a bad mood. what's getting under my skin is all the hate. the US-hating and the Bush-hating. civil, well-thought-out disagreement is fine. but i'm seeing so much disagreement that's based on pure hatred of our President and our traditional ideals. and before you go off talking about Imperialism being a traditional ideal (the British are sure ones to talk about that), keep in mind that the US has never actually militarily conquered another country (unless you count the indigenous peoples of the North American continent). we have fought for the liberation of peoples in other countries, introduced them to democracy, but never colonized or built any sort of empire. where were your cries of imperialism when Clinton bombed Baghdad in a vain attempt to shift attention from his personal scandals? well, he wasn't serious about punishing anyone, despite what he said after each of the terrorist attacks that occurred during his reign^Wterm in office.

just food for thought, i guess...

I think that I can't find any common ground with you at all on this, mostly because I disagree completely with your assessment of my attitude and the attitude of a lot of people I know.

It's not a case of "bowing" to one country or "hating" another. For me it is a very serious concern about the motives for this attack and the haste with which it is being conducted.

well, i didn't mean you personally, or anyone else on LJ for that matter. but a lot of Brits i've come into contact with on other forums (fora?) have been full of baseless claims and America-hating. of course, a lot of these people would hate the US no matter what we were doing...

like i said, disagreement is fine. but I see far too little actual disagreement and far too much hatemongering and flame wars, from which LJ has been mostly free.
