For the benefit of my friends abroad, as well as those who wouldn't… - love like me ・ 日記
non solum memento mori, memento vivere sed etiam
For the benefit of my friends abroad, as well as those who wouldn't listen to country music if their life depended on it, here I reproduce the lyrics to "Have You Forgotten?" by Darryl Worley. Non-political, non-war-related post coming up later.

I hear people saying we don't need this war
I say there's some things worth fighting for
What about our freedom and this piece of ground
We didn't get to keep 'em by backing down
They say we don't realize the mess we're getting in
Before you start your preaching let me ask you this my friend

Have you forgotten how it felt that day?
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away
Have you forgotten when those towers fell?
We had neighbors still inside going thru a living hell
And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

They took all the footage off my T.V.
Said it's too disturbing for you and me
It'll just breed anger that's what the experts say
If it was up to me I'd show it everyday
Some say this country's just out looking for a fight
After 9/11 man I'd have to say that's right

Have you forgotten how it felt that day?
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away
Have you forgotten when those towers fell?
We had neighbors still inside going thru a living hell
And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

I've been there with the soldiers
Who've gone away to war
And you can bet that they remember
Just what they're fighting for

Have you forgotten how it felt that day?
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away
Have you forgotten when those towers fell?
We had neighbors still inside going thru a living hell
And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

Have you forgotten all the people killed?
Some went down like heros in that Pennsylvania field
Have you forgotten about our Pentagon?
All the loved ones that we lost and those left to carry on
Don't you tell me not to worry about bin Laden
Have you forgotten?
Have you forgotten?
Have you forgotten?

And this relates to Iraq how exactly?

There is no credible evidence that has been released to the public linking the regime in Iraq to Osama Bin Laden. Bin Laden, on the other hand, has the nous to use the war in Iraq to his own propaganda purposes and appears to be doing very well out of it.

Yeah don't forget S11, but invading and trying to justify linking Iraq and Al Queda in a really flimsy way isn't going to reduce the incidence of terrorism by one iota. Good intelligence, paper trails and general police work are more likely to do that.

Don't forget S11 - hell, why not invade North Korea? Canada? Cuba? Australia? I'm sure you could link all of us with equally convincing evidence to terrorism...

well, I never said I completely agreed with the song. I agree with the sentiment, but I don't put much stock in the terrorism argument either.

I think you could find similar murals all round the middle east, probably some in Pakistan, Indonesia and probably in Europe. Just because some people supported the Al Qaeda and draw pictures to show it doesn't prove that their governments are actively involved.

I mean we know there are Al Qaeda (how do you spell that? I'm having a really bad day for spelling today) funded cells operating in Indonesia, but you'd have a hard time convincing me that the Indonesian government's actively involved in supporting them because you can buy Osama Bin Laden's face on a T-shirt in markets in Jakarta.

I don't think it's even "circumstantial" evidence about the regime's possible links with Bin Laden.

More just evidence that some people in Iraq supported the S11 attacks.
