This week I found a house for rent for $725/month just a few blocks from the university. It's about 1200 square feet, 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. Tomorrow (erm, later today) I go to put in a deposit and a rental application, because apparently I'm the only person seriously interested in the place. If I manage to get it, it'll be me, my sister, and a friend of hers (actually an ex-boyfriend from a couple years back, but he's a responsible bloke and they're good friends now, so there shouldn't be too many problems) moving in in a couple weeks. The master bedroom is huge, so it won't be cramped if we need to get a fourth person for whatever reason (or if I suffer another massive lapse in judgment and decide to take on another freeloader). Well, except for the whole one-bathroom thing.

I knew I'd have to move out this semester, but I didn't expect to find anything in my price range this soon. Now if I can just manage to get a shitty part-time job to feed myself on I'll be set. That's what I'll be doing the rest of tomorrow (today)...fingers crossed.

Is that, um, $725/month *each*, or $725 a month *total*?

$725 is just a bit more than my share for our apartment that's about the same size (Altogether we pay $2100, including utilities). High, but not unreasonable for what it is. If you're paying $725 each without utilities covered, though, that's pretty damn expensive.

$725 total, for any 3-bedroom place, is.. well, there's got to be something majorly wrong with it. I'd be extremely suspicious of any apartment where the basic share of rent per person were less than $500.

Actually, there's probably nothing wrong with it. You have to take into account the regional housing cost differences.

We have more space here, so it doesn't cost as much for housing. Especially in the shithole that is Arlington.

So, that would be $725 a month total, and it's a perfectly acceptable house.

Damn, I should move to Texas and keep this salary.
I'd be living in a frickin' mansion.

Heh, it's that "keeping the salary" part that would be difficult ;)

$725/month total, for a medium-sized house in an older (pre-1960 around here) neighborhood is about average. Rental prices have been going down a lot around here lately because of the availability of low-interest mortgages and the fact that we still have tons of space for people to build brand-new houses on.

Unbelievably, it's only had 1 owner its whole life. It was restored just before the last renter moved in, and they only stayed 4 months before they got transferred somewhere else, so the paint, carpet, and a/c is new (window units, but I'm not complaining).

Not knowing how the housing market in the US prices according to the UK I can't comment on Josh's question about how it'll be cheap/expensive but I can say congratulations on finding a decent house for you to move out into and hope the job hunting goes well...

That's awesome! I might come over if I can get over my fear of Arlington.

Tell me about it...

This has nothing to do with your own fears, but this morning in a QuikTrip whilst buying a soda I was invited to a male strip show tonight by a complete [male] stranger.

How exactly does one react to that?

Re: Tell me about it...

"I like to see mine for free" or "Ew! floppy bits!", depending on one's orientation.

Like, duh.
