One reason for this is that I want to write a comparison of the characterization in American vs. Japanese 1x2, and it might contain something that some of you might not want to hear about. Another is that it's always good to have a filter for who is okay with this sort of thing and who is not. And there are other reasons. Googling for a definition before filling out the poll is okay...

Missing Option

"Trying to say the hebrew name of God"?

Re: Missing Option

But isn't that pronounced... never mind. But it's not spelled like that. Then again, if God had been Japanese, it might have been...

Re: Missing Option

People tend to say "Yahweh", based on the hebrew spelling Y-H-V-H. That's exactly what I think of every time i see the word "Yaoi". I haven't bothered to look it up.. No idea what it means in Japanese :)

Re: Missing Option

People say it? *gasp*

I knew how it was spelled, but I was taught that saying it isn't a good thing.

Re: Missing Option

You're not supposed to say God's real name.
But nobody except the long-ago High Kohein Priests know exactly how to pronounce YHVH. People say "Jehovah" or "Yahweh", but those are just guesses.
In theory, if you stumbled across the True Name of God, something thundrous would happen.

I just looked it up.. and I have to say:

Huh? I don't get it. It's not exactly so much "gross" as.. "Why?"

What bothers me most, is that there is a 2-syllable word in Japanese for "cartoons of female fantasies about gay men".

valamelmeo From: valamelmeo Date: Thursday 15th January 2004 10.09 (UTC) (Link)
For the same reason there is porn for men featuring lesbians, there is porn for women featuring gay men.

That's the best explanation I've got.
From: lobotomymonkey Date: Thursday 15th January 2004 10.15 (UTC) (Link)
I'm not sure that's exactly a fair comparison.

Porn with Lesbians is entirely visual. We don't care *why* they are getting down together; we just like to watch.

It seems that this "yaoi" thing (apart from being a cartoon medium) is more about gay guys going around an acting gay together, but non-sexually.

From this conclusion, it seems to me that women into yaoi would get all horny watching Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Is this a correct conclusion?

valamelmeo From: valamelmeo Date: Thursday 15th January 2004 10.24 (UTC) (Link)
There are a few different 'levels' of yaoi. It doesn't matter if the guys are actually gay or not, but there is always an aspect of romance and/or sex. It is also visual. But showing the sex isn't necessary, because women can gain satisfaction from merely seeing men act romantically affectionate toward each other and fill in the blanks in their minds, so even the instances that don't involve graphic sex scenes do generally involve lots of physical contact.

It's not just 'gay guys going around and acting gay', it's men being physically affectionate towards each other. But don't get me wrong, it's not hard to find stuff in this genre that actually is very similar to lesbian porn for men.

Well, to answer the question proposed by the original post, you can feel free to add me to that filter. If there's something that offends me, I can ignore it just as much as anyone else can.

And you have me curious; I still don't understand the phenomenon. Every male porn fantasy can be directly (or at least pretty closely) linked to "I want to have sex with that/those girl(s)", at least on a subconscious level. It doesn't sound like Yaoi is about that.
valamelmeo From: valamelmeo Date: Thursday 15th January 2004 10.41 (UTC) (Link)
Of course it is. It's all about "I want to have sex with those guys", or at least "I want those guys to act like that with me", just like the male lesbian fantasy. It's just more subtle, and more linked to relationships, because that is what is important to women. That, and instead of real men it's drawn ones, usually popular anime/manga characters (this sort of thing exists for men too, only it's just porn in comic-book form, without the mushy stuff).

Incidentally, it's not just cartoons either. There are fics.

You know, this entire conversation might have been far more efficient over IM.. or in the good old days of #starbug (whereever it may rest now).. Heh.
valamelmeo From: valamelmeo Date: Thursday 15th January 2004 11.26 (UTC) (Link)
I could swear I've explained all this to someone in #starbug before... I thought it was you but maybe it was ajr...

I miss starbug.

Me too.

Oh, and 'yaoi' is 3 syllables.
