Is it a sign of reading too much manga that I have to remind myself… - love like me ・ 日記

Is it a sign of reading too much manga that I have to remind myself when I'm reading American comics that the boxes go left-to-right rather than right-to-left? I automatically start reading on the right and then I get confused.

Also, I only got about 3 hours of sleep last night. So tonight I went to bed at 8pm. I woke up at midnight all hot, because even though I did remember to turn on the a/c, I forgot to change my sheets, so I'm still sleeping under flannel sheets. But then, after having stripped down enough that the flannel sheets aren't an issue, I'm all wide awake.

That reminds me. I'm not gonna do it now, but I was gonna try to figure out how to make the little box around my entries inside the component have rounded corners (I will need help with this, in case anybody out there is conversant in S2). And I wanna screw around with the mini-calendar. I don't like the boxes, but I don't really wanna give it background images unless I do a different background image for active/inactive days... I'm just gonna fool around with the colors first, and see how that goes. I like the boxy look on the calendar, but I might try something where it puts a circle on active days, or something like that. But I do know I'm not keeping the grey. I meant to change that a long time ago. I wish I could work on all this at work tomorrow, but no 'net access, soooooo....

I really wish they'd release the Hikaru no Go GBA games in the US, so I could play go whenever I wanted to, and be able to understand the plot of the game too. I have roms of HikaGo 1 and 2 (the AI is surprisingly good, not to mention the delectable cuteness of the graphics, especially in 2), but it's really not the same as having an actual cartridge to stick in an actual GBA. Since I accidentally broke my USB gamepad by spilling 7up on it, emulation has become exceedingly annoying. I forgot that this was probably what gave me RSI in the first place, sitting in front of my computer for hours with my fingers hovering over the arrow keys and ESDF. I remember once I spent nearly 24 hours straight like that, playing Pokemon Yellow.

But my birthday's next month, so I might be able to find an excuse to splurge on an import GBA game, providing I don't have to replace my car stereo first. I did find out that the only way to unlock it now is to remove it from the car so as to get the serial number off the back, and call Volvo and ask them how to reset it, which sounds to me like at least as much trouble as buying a whole new stereo. Or at least getting a halfway-decent used one from a pawn shop, because it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me to drop $200 on a stereo for a 13-year-old car. Not that it's not a good car, but with all the problems I've been having with it, how much longer is it gonna last? It needs a new windshield and a paint job as well...

I did finally get my January issue of Shonen Jump ('bout damn time), and of course that sparked an argument between my siblings of which one of them was gonna get the free Red Eyes Black Dragon card that came with it, since I don't play Yu-Gi-Oh without being under duress and have no interest in collecting the cards. This was quickly solved when Scott offered me $12 for the card.

<drooling fangirl> And OMG I finally got to read the first couple of chapters of Hikaru no Go! I had figured out what the deal was, since later issues did come on time, and I could read the summary at the beginning of the section, plus I've seen some of the anime, but OMG. I think I love this almost as much as I love Shaman King. I <3333 Sai. Read my fic! Read it now! I also <3333 Akira, but not in a fic-writing way. Yet. ^_~ Angst pretty. </drooling fangirl>

Bah, who can sleep after a fangirl gush? I should probably at least try, though. I have to get up in a couple hours.

I have that same problem when I read American comics.
Is Scott still in that "Don't use the starter deck cards" mode? Cuz $12 for a REBD sounds kinda stupid to me.

OK, listen. I have a really DORKY idea, but it's probably a good idea. At the coffee shop where the cute guys hang out, they have all kinds of games. People go in there and drink coffee drinks and play board games and card games and all kinds of stuff. I bet if we brought in a go board and played, you could meet some cute Japanese guys. (I can't believe I just said that.)

Incidentally, someone *is* seeding more of the Aiko video, but only occasionally. I now have 89% just from leaving it on all weekend.

Bah, as if you'd play go. Besides, go boards are a pain in the ass to haul around with you, unless you can get a little magnetic folding one or something.

Unfortunately, playing go is also a good way to meet CompSci nerds who've seen the movie "Go"...

I'd play if it would help meet hot asian guys.

I know way too much about Yu-Gi-Oh cards.

Scott didn't pay $12 for a SDJ REBD, he paid $12 for a JMP REBD. Special edition, only available in the January 2004 issue of Shonen Jump.

Re: I know way too much about Yu-Gi-Oh cards.

so, it's for collecting then and not playing with.

I admit I don't really get the collecting thing. I mean, one REBD is as good as the next if you're playing the card game.

Well, I can't dispute the cuteness of the graphics, but I do think the AI does leave a bit to be desired. cjd has a Japanese copy of the first game (the actual cart, not just a ROM) and I've played it a couple of times. The problems seem decent, but the AI in games? I'm not convinced.

To illustrate - I was playing a game where there was a large chunk of the board which was dead. Or rather, would be dead. So I didn't bother playing it out. Which is what you do in a normal game. But the AI? Bah. It claimed the group as being alive for the computer, even though it quite patently wasn't, as I explained in detail to Chris at the time - I suppose you can say I was a tad annoyed. :)

Chris also credits the HnG games with luring him into bad habits that result in him losing horribly whenever he plays against me. :)

For the record, I'm now around 8 kyu (which I understand is equivalent to 6 kyu in America), and heck, there was one time in Go club where I played a 4 kyu player and gave him a two stone handicap (yep, you read that right, I played as white) and I won. You could've knocked me over with a feather. Though, granted, I won because of his mistakes, not because of my skill. He was eating at the time too and so probably a bit distracted.

I'm eagerly awaiting the individual volumes of the HnG manga. Amazon.co.uk tells me the first one is due 'round July. Ish. Naturally I've pre-ordered it already. :)

At any rate, it's better than any other AI go system I've been in contact with. To be honest, I've played game 2 a lot more than I've played game 1, and the AI seems to be a bit better, so if I buy one, it'll be that one. Besides, 2 has even cuter graphics. ^_^ There is the small matter that 2 doesn't allow you to skip the tutorial mode, but that just means you have to remember to save in a different slot, so you can restart just after the tutorial if you want to start a new game.

I haven't played go against a real live person in about 2 years now, since I don't know anyone around here who plays, and the local AGA chapter is an hour's drive away and they meet on weeknights when I have other things to do. I had worked my way up to about 10 kyu while I was in Phoenix and regularly playing, but if I had to give a ranking based on my confidence level at this point, I'd rate myself at maybe 18 kyu. I really don't have a head for this sort of thing, but I still find it addictively fun.

Maybe it's time I bought myself a board and some stones and took up sitting around at coffeeshops asking strangers to play with me...

You could always try playing online. There's Yahoo Go for something quick and easy, but there's also IGS and KGS.

Or you could try the coffee shop thing. :)
