Interrupted during drain inspection ^_^

And something I noticed today. All the insane guys who have nature shows in which they take stupid risks, why are they all Australian?

They're not all Australian. Just kinda mostly.

Steve Irwin has a lot to answer for, IMHO.

Mostly it's because, um, we have a lot of nature. We also have a lot of spoof shows about that genre now.

But it does beg the question of where all the Florida guys who wrestle alligators and bears are and why they aren't on TV..

You know, I've often wondered about that as well. I think it all goes back to accent-related prejudices. Anyone on TV with a Southern accent is generally labeled as a redneck simpleton, unless the show takes place in the South (and so everyone on the show has that accent at least to a small degree, if it's done right). Nature shows generally only have one person in them, and that person isn't actually the focus of the show. They're just there to show off how much they know about whatever animals happen to be the focus of that particular show, and since this involves a lot of talking, the person has to sound authoritative. And for some reason, at least to US audiences, a Southern accent makes you immediately uneducated.

Either that, or all the alligator-rasslin' Floridians are just too ugly to put on TV. ;)

I <3 my black cat. It's like having a miniature panther in the house.

I think it's partially a bandwagon thing. Like hnpcc said, it's all Steve Irwin's fault.

Yeah, it's just one of those things that occurred to me as I was watching Ian Gordon wrestle sharks...

Then about an hour after I posted that, I found another show where it was a couple of Frenchmen and a South African woman trying to capture a crocodile, so I suppose Australians on nature shows don't have a monopoly on disregard for personal safety...

I suppose it balances out. All the vulcanologists I've seen climbing into active craters on TV lately have been Americans...
