Sometime around 8am on Saturday, my sister's boyfriend passed away.… - love like me ・ 日記
non solum memento mori, memento vivere sed etiam
Sometime around 8am on Saturday, my sister's boyfriend passed away. He was 41.

He had cirrhosis of the liver caused by nearly 20 years of heavy drinking. He got a nosebleed around 11pm Friday night, and was rushed to the hospital, where they found it difficult to stop the bleeding, because his liver problems had led to a severe deficiency of platelets in his blood. Because of the amount of blood he had ingested, he burst a vein in his esophagus from coughing up blood, and the next morning as my sister and a nurse were helping him to the bathroom, he stopped breathing and they were unable to revive him.

The irony is that since he met my sister he had been trying to stop drinking and get treatment for his condition, but it turned out to be too little, too late. He was outgoing and friendly, and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Please send your thoughts and prayers to my sister and to his family, if you have any to spare.

That's a real shame, hope your sister is OK - or as well can be expected.

She is doing as well as can be expected. His family has been very supportive of her, and the memorial service (which was... hmm, I suppose yesterday, now) was enjoyable, as those things go.

This is wreaking havoc on my sleep and my gasoline budget, though. She lives 3 hours away, and I had to drive down on Saturday, come back for work on Sunday, leave right after work on Tuesday morning to make it to the service... Thankfully I got Tuesday night off, but came back so I can work tonight, and will be making my way back for the weekend. About half a tank each way, plus whatever driving around I do while I'm there, but I think in this case it's worth it, as long as I drive at night when there's hardly any traffic.
