Peanut Butter!
I'm in a strange mood today.

Not a bad one, but more or less like... detached. But not in a bad way. Kind of like when you have too much cold medicine and it sorta seems like your head isn't attached to your body? Yeah, like that. Except I haven't taken anything.

For instance, I'm highly amused at this jar of peanut butter. It's one of those "natural" brands with no sugar added. The ingredients list is like: peanuts, vegetable oil, salt. But on the front of the label, in small print, it says "Peanut Butter is Not a Reduced Calorie Food / See Back Panel for Sugar & Calorie Content" and I can't stop laughing about that. I don't know whether this is because of the mockery they made of title case, or because the very idea that anybody would ever think peanut butter was low in calories is insane, or because anybody who hasn't figured out that the nutrition information is on the back is probably illiterate anyway. Anyway, I'm finding it about 20 times more amusing than it should be.

Incidentally, the "natural" peanut butter with the vegetable oil in it is not as good as the ones without. But for some reason it's cheaper by half, which is why I decided to try it. Turns out it tastes like the regular processed peanut butter with high fructose corn syrup. Go figure.

The cost of corn syrup has gone up in part because the cost of corn has gone up. Which is partly due to crop factors and partly due to the increase in ethanol based fuels I think. At least I'm fairly sure I read that somewhere but I've no idea where.

You're right, the cost of corn syrup has gone up. But this jar of peanut butter, which doesn't contain corn syrup but does contain vegetable oil, was about $2.50. The jars that do contain corn syrup were about $3.50. The jars that contain simply pureed peanuts and salt were about $5.50.

...Maybe I'm putting too much thought into this. It's just peanut butter.
